Madrigal Madness 2022

Marenzio: Madrigals, Book 9

Saturday, June 18 at 5:00 pm
Immanuel Lutheran Church
122 East 88th Street at Lexington Avenue
New York, NY 10128

ARTEK and the 2022 Madrigal Madness Fellows will present a one-hour live concert of eight madrigals by Luca Marenzio (1553/4-1599) from Book 9 (1599).

Luca Marenzio’s madrigals are considered by many to be the epitome of the a cappella madrigal genre. His Book 9 is famous for its radical use of chromaticism for dramatic effect, all within the framework of the Renaissance madrigal style. The madrigals are set to poetry by Dante, Petrarch, and Guarini – some of the finest Italian poets. The performance by ARTEK and the Fellows will also demonstrate the use of Improvised ensemble ornamentation in madrigals that was expected in Marenzio’s time – a lost art being rediscovered today.

ADMISSION: Free, but donations welcome (suggested donation, $15). No tickets or reservations necessary. Doors open at 4:30 pm. The concert will last approximately one hour.

A recording of the concert will appear on the ARTEK YouTube channel at a later date. Please join us live if you can!
