Stylus fantasticus, marked by its improvisatory freedom within the bounds of a rhetorical structure, found its highest expression in the works of Dietrich Buxtehude. The powerful burghers of the Free City of Lübeck enjoyed a lively intellectual and cultural life with frequent concerts; Buxtehude’s stylus fantasticus chamber music truly flourished in this free-spirited Hanseatic atmosphere of innovative musical expression.
