The Art of the Solo Violin

Cynthia Freivogel performs works for solo violin

This year, ARTEK invites our audiences to share in the special magic that violinist Cynthia Freivogel brings in every performance. In fall and spring she will present two special performances: in the fall, she will perform some of the earliest works for solo violin, by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Johann Joseph Vilsmayr, and Johann Paul von Westhoff. These rarely-heard masterpieces pieces exemplify the glittering  virtuosity of seventeenth-century violin repertoire. In the spring, Cynthia will treat us to her favorite solo Bach sonatas and partitas, including the famous D minor Partita with its monumental Chaconne.
“She draws a rich range of tonal colors from her violin and brings freshness, verve and a wonderfully natural sense of phrasing to her playing.” – The Denver Post
Cynthia is well-known to audiences worldwide; based in Amsterdam (Netherlands)  where she lives with her physicist husband, she performs regularly with top European ensembles (Combattimento, Vox Luminis, Concerto Köln).
“Cynthia and I have been performing together since 2009. One of the many highlights  of our collaboration was performing at the Trevi nel Lazio Festival in in Italy with with a 17th-century organ,” says Director Gwendolyn Toth. (Freivogel/Toth live in Italy, here).
But she is also infamous as the “Winter” violinist on Youtube, with millions of views. Here, her performance of Vivaldi’s “Spring” with ARTEK. =
