Omlandia Allegra – Meantone Organs in Holland

Gwendolyn Toth plays delightful music from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries on two quarter-comma meantone organs: the Renaissance organ in Krewerd, 1531, one of the oldest organs in the world in original condition ; and the organ in Zeerijp restored to its original early baroque disposition. The contrast between the powerful Renaissance sound of the 7-stop single manual Renaissance organ in Krewerd contrasts strongly with the sweetness of the larger baroque organ in Zeerijp. Music includes selections from Faenza Codex, Buxheimer Orgelbuch, tablatures from France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Netherlands, and monumental works by Sweelinck, Scheidemann, and Racquet. “It is nice to be able to compare the organs of Zeerijp and Krewerd, both in meantone: the muscular, aggressive and loud organ of Krewerd (The screamer from Krewerd…) and the much more vocal and versatile organ of Zeerijp. Toth plays wonderfully, beautiful tempi with a a very clearly articulated and natural touch.” – Peter van Dijk
