The Seven Last Words of Christ by Franx Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Gwendolyn Toth and Dongsok Shin, fortepiano
Franz Joseph Haydn's Seven Last Words was originally written for orchestra. Later, Haydn arranged the work for string quartet, and later oversaw an edition for chorus. In 1801, his publisher Artaria published the score of the quartet as a piece for solo fortepiano. Some years later, the 19th-century organist Louis Winkler, who specialized in arranging the symphonic works of Beethoven for piano, arranged the work for piano 4-hands, in a version which owes much to the original orchestral version. ARTEK Director Gwendolyn Toth and her husband Dongsok Shin will perform the the 4-hands version version for this concert on their original 18th-century fortepiano.
